Just like Yixing teapots made of the same clay, this tea pet is unglazed and is mostly monochromatic with a rough surface; that is better to absorb the tea.

A tea pet typically has tea poured on it during tea time. Due the lack of glazing, the figurine absorbs some of the tea.

This results in the tea pet slowly changing color over time, as well as infuses the pet with the scent of tea.
